The development of women's colleges in the US goes back to the early 1800's, and while their numbers declined after many institutions went co-ed in the 1970's, the more than 50 women's colleges still around continue to offer excellent opportunities for postsecondary study.

While they offer many of the same programs as co-ed universities and colleges, they also offer distinctive women-centered pedagogies, curricula, and environments that are focused on helping students achieve their personal and professional development goals. For many students, these schools also provide environments to pursue-and excel in-subject and career areas in which women are traditionally underrepresented, such as science, law, math, computer science and engineering. Many women's colleges offer cross registration with neighboring co-ed colleges and universities, so attending a women's college doesn't mean giving up on a co-ed social life!
